Once Again, Nothing is New

Image
This month, I've been working on some cut stencil resist pieces. Three out of four are keepers. One, goes into the trash bin. I have a friend who has an entire house full of art from my trash bin. Recycling. Mid century modern fabric from Knoll Anyway, the critic, who lives across the way, came over for her fifth daily visit and said " Oh those are interesting, they look like mid century modern art. " The really wasn't my intention. When I began working on these pieces, I was attempting to force myself away from geometrics. I like some order. But after completing twenty some odd pieces in the woven series, with several still sitting in the to do closet, I was weary of straight lines and decided to start working on some curves. Bows by Josef Frank at Cora Ginsburg LLC (doesn't this look like a contemporary art quilt design?) After the critic left I took a good look at the work, and decide that she was, as usual, correct. There are times when I wish t...

Hand Dyed 100% Cotton Quilt Fabric - 021411-6 Size - 10" x 11" From TextileAlchemist This hand dyed 100% cotton quilting weight fabric is great for sewing and crafting. I use Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes with a low water immersion dyeing technique. All fabrics are rinsed in hot water, and then washed in the washing machine in hot water with Synthrapol. Crackle effect is a secondary step using a resist and paint. “I believe there is value in creating something handmade. A handmade object carries within it the energy of the maker and imprints a piece of the artist’s soul. May the keeper of my creation feel the peace and love put into every steop of it’s making. For me this is soul satisfying work and I feel fortunate to share it with you!” Jamie Kalvestran Jamie received her first design assignment while only in the sixth grade. The school principal, recognizing her talents, called her into his office. Her assignment? Complete artistic freedom to paint the scho...

"Isla New York was created in 2009 by me, Regina! I design and sew each piece by hand in my little New York apartment :) Whenever there is an eco friendly alternative for fabrics, I always try to use that option. San Diego City Public Libraries - Decreasing Hours

The mayor of San Diego is proposing a cut to the number of days and hours that libraries are open as part of getting the city budget under control. The inability to read, analyze the information we have read, and form a logical conclusion are some of the reasons the mayor was able to get elected. Now he wants to increase the numbers of ignorant folk running around the city. Several years ago, some city libraries became known as hot spots. Starbucks coffee wagons were outside, and sometimes inside too. The library on a week night or weekend afternoon was a place to meet others, research, use the computer, read a story to your children, see an art exhibit. A community center. What can an artist do? Let Jerry Sanders know that our libraries are a valuable community resource and should be open more days and more hours not less. (See Resources below) Have you considered holding a workshop at your community library and donating some or all of the proceeds to the library? Wou...

Creating Time

Image
The production work for this month is complete. (I've been workng on my photography skills. This is a good digital representation of "Sunset." The piece is hand dyed repurposed cotton sheets, cut into strips, hand woven and hand stitched. It is 22 X 26 inches, or something like that. Yasmin Sabur 2011) Now I get to do some "art." It will take me a few days to stop thinking in multiples. Or maybe I won't stop thinking in multiples, but just try to slow down. Series are multiples, and I have at least two that I need to do some work on. Today, I'll just play around with some ideas. Tomorrow is soon enough to look in the to do closet and pull out pieces that need tweaking or more work.

Deadlines

From "share alike. Cotton statesymbolsusa.org" Well, April 1st has come and gone. I'm counting what I accomplished, not what remains to be done. Going down the list: Etsy store is stocked, have enough merchandise to add two or three items daily through Mother's Day! Yeah! Posting on a regular basis to the blog. Ready to return to Tuesday's Designer. This weekly post features other folks and their work in fine crafts. Clear in my mind about the difference between my profile and company pages on Facebook and LinkedIn. Process for posting articles and links to groups and pages set up and working. Web site for fine art set up. I've overcome the issues with photographing my work. Much of this is just coming to peace with the limitations of digital photography and viewing digital images on the internet. For me this is neither science nor art, just painful. Haven't written much about this, but four of the eight pieces in the "Triangular Trade...
