Shibori Design for Spoonflower Fabric

I love both surface textile design hand processes and the new technology. I work on combining both. Giving myself the thrill of everything that can go wrong working with fabric, dye, and resists, and the calm, orderly, but somewhat plastic and predictable sense of achievement derived from designing with software.

I dyed this fabric using several shibori processes, pole wrapping, measured free hand wrapping, over dyeing, folding on a diagonal and who knows what else. The fabric is 5mm, silk habotai. Both fabric and supplies are from Dharma Trading Co.

I freely admit that I am supposed to be working in a fall/winter color palette. Having difficulty getting there. It has been 100+ degrees in San Diego at 7pm. So much for maroon and olive green.

Okay, after washing, rinsing, washing again and pressing while damp, I got out the digital camera, pinned the fabric to my layout table, climbed on the ladder (the fabric is two yards long), and started shooting away. I always take a bunch of pictures to have a good selection to choose from.

That was it for the hand process. Next the images were uploaded into Photoshop and edited. Illustrator is where the design work takes place. So much fun, when I am in a Zen design state. The selected image was copied three times.  Using the free tranform tool I manipulated each copy into place. The image shows the design at a good enough stage to order a color sample from Spoonflower. While I'm waiting for the sample, I'll tweak the design. Some concern about dark edges when the fabric goes into repeat. The repeat by the way is 14 by 18 inches.

The final pattern will be printed for quilting weight, ulphostery weight, and organic fabrics - cotton sateen, cotton knit, and a cotton/bamboo/rayon blend. These should be available in the yasmintoo! shop as fat quarters, 1/2 yard and full yard cuts.

Each original piece of fabric will become at least three patterns. There are two other shibori designs for the month of September, I'll give you a sneak peek as soon as they are uploaded to Illustrator and the basic design motif has been created.
