Tuesday's Designer - Stephanie Borg

Tuesday's Designer is a yasmintoo series of blog posts on textile designers whose work I find beautiful, intriguing, yummy and worth further exploration.

Previously featured designers live and work all over the globe. So far, Tuesday's Designer has delved into the work and creative design process of Nedra Williams from Oakland, CA, USA; Liz Scott, also from the US; Silvia Maria Canu from Sao Paulo, Brazil; Emmanuelle Marion of Ireland; and Caroline Wall, who works and lives in Britain. (Posts on Nedra, Liz and Silvia are archived
here.)

This week's Tuesday's Designer is Stephanie Borg, a citizen of the World, whose work is heavily influenced by the Sultanate of Oman.

Stephanie's colorful and contemporary take on traditional textile design motifs is refreshing. I was most taken by her bold and striking use of color. Take a look and see what you think.

Stephanie is a self-taught artist who has worked as a graphic designer for the past 20 years. Her love for colour and pattern is obvious and is a fascination which has been a constant companion since childhood. Stephanie has combined an understanding of colour and linear form to develop a series of patterned designs.

Stephanie talks about her design process and inspiration: "I believe that inspiration is everywhere. However, I've been greatly influenced by my travels and particularly by my living experience in the Sultanate of Oman of over 5 years. In Oman the traditional dress of the ladies is an eclectic mix of the most unusual colour combinations and pattern. In my artworks, one can see that the Omani dress is a favourite theme and in these drawings, I come up with my own pattern designs - nothing is copied."

"The bold and graphical patterns of the 70s are another inspiration for me - I'm a 70's child after all! As a child, my favourite outing was accompanying my mother to a small fabric shop. For me it was like being in a sweet shop."

"My love for pattern has continued to grow with me. With the launch of my newly designed and updated website, I have just introduced a series of surface pattern designs that can be applied to a range of materials, or simply hung as a wall canvas."

Stephanie's pattern designs are versatile, and applicable for a variety of uses  from wallpaper and textiles, to stationery.
