The dyeing is finished, next quilting!

I finished dyeing the large 44 X 72 inch  top piece for my next quilt.

The rain in Southern California kept me from taking images of the piece, it has to be photographed outside on the line.

The fabric is cotton sateen. I used Procion MX fiber reactive dyes. The resist process  involved clamping areas of the fabric with several pieces of rectangular lightweight wood.

The fabric was folded, clamped, and dyed, fixed, rinsed, washed and dryed through six dye baths.

Now, this piece is ready to be quilted.

The piece will be layered with organic cotton batting and a lightweight natural linen back.

I'm stilling deliberating if I want to quilt using fine copper wire or copper cotton quilting thread. The quilting will be done by hand, in either lines or rectangles.

  1. I love your dyeing technique. My silk order arrived this morning. I may have to come back and ask a few questions aout your techniques (although I ill wait until this carpet ride is done and things aren't so hectic). Do you ever use natural dyes?

  2. No, I haven't used natural dyes, but it's on my to do list. I understand that the mordants used to develop the color may be as harmful as the chemicals in synthetic dye and the chemicals used to develop color with them. Perhaps, we can check out natural dyes together.

  3. I enjoyed reading your posts about your beautiful beginning attempts at shibori dyeing. I have begun to dye some of my own fabrics, have just moved and had a studio built and now I'm just itching to be all settled and do some dyeing. For now I'll have to just enjoy looking at others work and the pieces I have already done. As I continued down your blog, I found, to my delight, that you linked to my etsy shop. What a nice surprise. Thanks for including my mom's quilt in your very select group of items. She did a georgeous quilt that is touring around Oregon with some of my hand dyes. Keep up the great blog! I have one, though sorely neglected with my move at www.triscartsi.com
    thanks for the treat!
