Photographing Scarves and Other Square and Rectangular Items

I was hoping to photograph the stoles and shawls on Thursday. That didn't work out. Wanted to use my sister Leigh as a model, and our schedules changed and we weren't able to work out a new time convenient for both of us.

So I took a look at the Hermes site to see how they shoot images of their extremely expensive and luxurious products.

First everything is shot on an angle. This resolves one issue with shooting squares and rectangles. The distortion of the geometric shape. With scarves, this often means cropping off a border when trying to square the image up in Photoshop.

Then no human models. Instead whimsically illustrated line drawings for a back drop. At the Hermes level this is a cost saving technique and the drawings are charming and much less difficult to deal with than a 17 year old Russian high fashion model. (For some reason I don't think many 17 year olds are purchasing $775.00 Hermes scarves.)

So, I'm pulling out some my roll of newsprint. Using some of my blocks to print a charming design on the paper to create a backdrop, moving a six foot table into the back yard,  arranging my scarves, stoles and shawls on the backdrop, setting up my lighting, getting out the ladder to take over head shots, and seeing what happens.

New shots up on Sunday.

I broke my new resolution for internet activity. I am supposed to spend no more than 30 minutes daily on the internet. Taking care of my business and then closing windows and getting back to work. Boy, I got touched by a series of posts from an artist whose work I admire, who appears to be having a walking nervous break down online. Lesson learned. I don't have a high success rate dealing with the nuts in my own personal life, why would I be intrigued with the adventures of a nut online? Discipline, discipline, oh how hard you are to develop.

Bye, until tomorrow.
